Middle East International ServicesArabic SpecialistsGo far with languages: The story of one international language learner.Life can take you some funny places sometimes, it twists and turns and you can never exactly see what’s coming up around the corner. Perhaps you could be destined for an international career, yet on the other hand, fate may have it that you’re set up with a family only a block away from your childhood home. Having recently arrived in Egypt, I’ve been forced to reflect on life’s road that’s taken me to the point of learning Arabic. A late-bloomer when it came to learning languages, my first foray into the world of languages was quite inauspiciously teaching an English course Melbourne. Moving from my hometown of Melbourne in Australia to Vladivostok in Russia to teach English and study Russian, I happened to meet my partner, who just happened to be French. The result of that was on our return to Australia, I found myself not only teaching an English course Sydney and then an English course Adelaide, but also attending a French course Sydney and a French course Adelaide, all depending on where we were living at the time. Low and behold, I found myself living in Marseille soon after and it was then that my interest for Arabic developed through exposure to Algerian chaabi music. Through a chance posting to Cairo, it seems that my journey has come full circle! From teaching English in Australia to learning Russian in Russia, followed by French in France and establishing myself in Egypt, it’s clear that life never takes one on a clear cut path! Throughout my studies I’ve been lucky enough to learn languages both in a foreign and native context, and I’d recommend either to anyone who was interested in pursuing a different direction in life!
